Part 1: Wed, Nov 13: Advocacy 101
4-5pm, online
Part 2: Wed, Nov 20: Media Advocacy + Farmer Experiences in Public Office
12-4pm, Viles Arboretum, Augusta
Want to learn how you can get more involved in shaping policy at the local, state and federal level? Join us for a two-part farmer advocacy training. The first part will be online and will cover the basics of advocacy, from defining your policy objectives to thinking through how to communicate your ideas effectively, timelines to be aware of and how things become law. You'll leave with a toolkit to help you take action. The second part will be an in-person deeper dive workshop that includes:
A panel discussion about what it’s like to serve in public office as a farmer. With farmer panelists –
• Penny Jordon, Jordan’s Farm, Cape Elizabeth
• Mark Guzzi, Peacemeal Farm, Dixmont
• Sen. Russell Black, Black Acres, Wilton/Jay (R – Franklin)
• Sen. Stacy Brenner, Broadturn Farm, Scarborough (D – Cumberland)
And a session on media advocacy, like writing an effective op-ed and giving an interview, co-presented by MFT and Annie Watson of Sheepscot Valley Farm and Maine Dairy Industry Association.
Lunch provided and reimbursements for mileage to the in-person workshop are available.
When you register you can opt into one or the other, but we recommend signing up for both, especially if you are new to advocacy!
