In so many ways, being a farmer today is harder than it’s ever been – yet there are reasons to be hopeful about the future of farming in Maine.

The latest U.S. Census of Agriculture shows that Maine is losing farmland and farmers, while increasing production and land costs are making it harder for both new and established farmers to grow successful businesses. But visit Tiny Acres Farm in Montville and you’ll see enthusiastic young farmers Erin Donahue and David Andrews tending their mixed vegetables and mushroom woodlot as they prepare for this year’s CSA on the 26-acre farm they lease. This spring, Maine Farmland Trust plans to purchase the property, protect it with an easement, and sell it to Erin and David at agricultural value when they have the finances to make the purchase. Meanwhile, Erin and David are analyzing how Tiny Acres Farm can become more efficient, profitable, and reach more customers through our year-long Business of Farming program.

With your membership, you are helping farmers like Erin and David get off to a successful start, build a farm business that can thrive in the decades to come, and ensure that generations of farmers after them can do the same. Join thousands of supporters from across the country who are growing the future of farming in Maine – and just think of how much we can do when we come together.

Together we can make real progress protecting and stewarding farmland, increasing access to affordable farmland, and supporting farmers, so that we can all reap the benefits of a vibrant food and farm economy.
